After reading some of Anna Goodstein’s (2007) Totally Wired, I was interested in seeing what else she’s done. Anna Goodstein also wrties a blog called YPulse. YPulse is a sort of news webpage for tweens. It also includes a variety of materials for college students, in the workplace, multiculturalism, and even research questions in the forms of interviews and reviews. The website appears to be a great source of information for young adults.
Since this class focuses on tweens, I decided to mostly check out that link. Featured on the main page are opinion pieces and links to articles which affect tweens. One such link was Tween Safety Resources Online To Know. This made me wonder how many sites do offer safety for tweens online. With growing concerns over cyberbullying, parents’ fear of sexual predators (although Goodstein does not feel its as prevalent as one may think), or even just efficient and clear communication, understanding safety and netiquette is a good thing for tweens.
YPulse’s article is excellent because it acts more as a subject bibliography than an actual procedural. While the article does include a link to “what it takes to be a good digital citizen,” I found it more interesting that the site offered resources. Furthermore, members were allowed to comment and offer their suggestions both on the article and more sites for future reference.
Unfortunately few articles appear to be geared specifically for tweens only. Many offered a broad spectrum of ages, usually the teenage years to adulthood. While this does not necessarily surprise me, it shows the precarious balance between tween years and teen years.
